Frequently Asked Questions

Got Questions?? Hopefully you'll find the answer below! If not please feel free to call our friendly Guest Service team on 021 680 694.

How do I find out what the current weather and snow conditions are?

See our Snow Report.

What is the access road like?

One of the best in NZ, and is suitable for all types of vehicles!!  From the turnoff on Lilybank Road to our base lodge, it’s only 8km. Please ensure that you carry snow chains and know how to fit them!

Our snow report will indicate if chains are required and for what type of vehicle. There will be a sign on the access road showing where to fit them. We do not hire or sell chains so it is essential that you have them before leaving Lake Tekapo Village. Chains are available for purchase at the Challenge Service Station.

Road and parking access is free to all users.

Can I use the access road when Roundhill is closed?

Only for walking and cycling. The final 5km of our access road (from the Department of Conservation carpark up) is only open to vehicles 8:00 am to 5:00 pm while the ski area is open. At all other times, the gate is locked.

Can I hire ski equipment at Roundhill?

You can hire all your ski and snowboard equipment such as skis, poles, ski boots, snowboards, snowboard boots, helmets, harnesses, wrist guards and toboggans. Goggles, gloves, hats and Roundhill branded apparel are available to purchase at our cafe.

Please note that we do not hire or sell Jackets or Snow Pants, these can be hired from Kiwi Treasures or purchased from Outside Sports in Lake Tekapo Village.

I’ve never skied or snowboarded before, what should I do?

A First Timers Package is the one for you! This includes everything you need to get started ( beginners lift pass, skis/boots/poles or a snowboard/boots and a group lesson). There is no need to book in advance as these packs can be purchased at the mountain ticket office daily. The minimum age for a child’s ski lesson is 5 years and snowboard lesson is 8 years.  We recommend being at Roundhill 1 hour before your lesson to allow plenty of time for ticketing and rental fitting.

What should I wear on the mountain?

Our base lodge sits at 1350 metres above sea level, so we recommend you wrap up warm even on sunny days. We suggest you wear waterproof pants and jacket, a warm hat and waterproof gloves. UV rated eye protection is essential and because of the reflection of the snow, sunscreen is recommended whether a fine day or not.

Is there EFTPOS on the mountain?

Yes we have EFTPOS facilities at all of our points of sale.  We also accept Visa and Mastercard.

Can I bring my dog to Roundhill?

As part of our lease agreement with the Department of Conservation – Dogs are not permitted at Roundhill, except for those associated with the operation of the ski area such as avalanche dogs.

Can I ride the lifts at Roundhill while carrying a child in a backpack?

We strongly discourage this. If you choose to do this anyway – it is completely at your own risk.
